Glitch Log #26: The Perfect Blue Sofa Incident
As part of the job that I was to do for the airbnb fit out that I mentioned in Glitch Log #8 (about manifesting an awesome job ) I needed to source a sofa. I had envisaged a very particular kind of sofa. I could see it in my mind: I needed it to be very long, with a chaise longue section on the left. I also needed it to be a deep dark blue to match a feature in the open plan kitchen. I had a very specific budget and I needed it as soon as possible because guests would be arriving soon. I had searched the internet for this sofa fruitlessly for days, literally. I could either find the perfect sofa but the delivery time would be three months because they had to be especially made, or I could find cheap ones that were ready made and available immediately but were too small and not good enough quality. It was useless. So, I decided to search ‘real life’. I went into Brighton one day and searched every store that I could within the vicinity. I found nothing. On the way home my client insisted that I go to one more shop. He wanted me to look at one particular sofa that he had seen and thought was okay but I’d seen a photo, I already knew I didn’t like it. But I did as I was asked anyway. I went in to the shop that he suggested, I looked at the sofa that he had suggested and still completely disapproved of it. It was so not what I was looking for at all. It fit his budget but it did not fit my design plan (to bring colour to the room without painting the walls) whatsoever! I really quite loathed it in fact. Then I turned and looked around me. Right next to the ugly sofa that I couldn’t agree to, there was a another: a huge navy blue sofa, completely the right size, and the right design, complete with left hand chaise longue. Perfect. I sat on it and I thought it was amazing. I looked at the price tag and miraculously the price had been slashed to less than half! It was so cheap compared to what it should have been. I could barely believe it. I spoke to the sales woman and she told me that it had been ordered by somebody but when they got it to their home they realized that it didn’t fit so they had returned it. Now the store were looking to get rid of it as fast as possible, they didn’t have room for it either and needed it gone. Brilliant I said, I am looking to have it delivered as fast as possible. We bought that sofa that day and our guests comment on how wonderful it is regularly. Mostly though, I wonder at the seemingly magical manifestation of the Perfect Blue Sofa right next to the ugly one! What a coincidence?!
I was so excited that day. Having searched so hard for so long and found nothing, finding this sofa, my exact specifications, felt like a miracle! But really, why was I so surprised? I’d imagined it for ages and then there is was… Just as you might expect in this holodeck we call ‘Real Life’.
If you’re not already experimenting with your own holodeck I encourage you, get to it!
